Despite being considered compact, it boasts a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. A wonderful walking city with a rich history just waiting to be explored.
The Islands
The Isle of Skye is connected to Scotland's northwest coast by bridge and is known for its rugged landscapes, picturesque fishing villages and medieval castles. It is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides archipelago and is a wonderful destination for wildlife watching.
The Outer Hebrides lie further west from Skye and are a diverse chain of inter-connected islands, with their own unique way of life. Strolling white sand beaches, exploring in the shadow of 5,000 year old standing stones, a place where history and culture is always a presence.
At the northern tip of Scotland are the Orkney Islands. Encompassing Neolithic sites, tall sandstone cliffs and seal colonies. These islands played a strong roll in both World Wars and poignant reminders are still etched in the landscape today. The beautiful Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners of war along with the Churchill Barriers make this an area worth exploring especially for history buffs.
The Shetlands are a subarctic archipelago of Scotland that lies northeast of Great Britain. The main port of Lerwick is almost equidistant from the city of Aberdeen and Bergen in Norway, which makes it a great spot to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
